Can Marrying a U.S. Citizen Fast-Track Naturalization?

Love and citizenship—what a combo! If you’ve married a U.S. citizen, you might be wondering: Does this mean I can get my citizenship faster? The short answer is yes, but there’s a process. Let’s break down how marriage can help speed up your journey to becoming a U.S. citizen.
Get a Green Card First
Marriage to a U.S. citizen doesn’t grant automatic citizenship—but it does make you eligible for a green card. Here’s how it works:
✔ If you’re already in the U.S., you can apply for Adjustment of Status (Form I-485).
✔ If you’re outside the U.S., you’ll go through Consular Processing to get your immigrant visa. ✔ Once approved, you’ll receive a Conditional Green Card if married less than two years or a Permanent Green Card if married longer.
The 3-Year Naturalization Rule
Normally, green card holders must wait 5 years before applying for U.S. citizenship. But if you’re married to a U.S. citizen, you may qualify under the 3-year rule, provided that:
You’ve been a lawful permanent resident (LPR) for at least 3 years.
You’ve been living with your U.S. citizen spouse the entire time.
Your marriage is still valid and ongoing.
You meet all other naturalization requirements (good moral character, physical presence, etc.).
Meeting the Physical Presence Requirement
Even under the faster 3-year path, you still need to prove:
📍 You lived in the U.S. for at least 18 months within those 3 years.
📍 You haven’t spent more than 6 months outside the U.S. at a time.
📍 You meet residency requirements in the state where you apply.
Preparing for the Naturalization Interview
Once eligible, you’ll file Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization). USCIS will then:
Schedule your biometrics appointment.
Interview you to test your English and civics knowledge.
Review your marriage and green card history to confirm eligibility.
Take the Oath and Celebrate!
If all goes well, you’ll receive an invitation to take the Oath of Allegiance, officially making you a U.S. citizen! This means:
✅ You can vote in U.S. elections.
✅ You can apply for a U.S. passport.
✅ You’ll no longer have to renew your green card.
